Throwbacks

Today is throwback Thursday and I was trying to think of some of my favorite music growing up. I came to the realization that I really never had a “type” of music I liked. I had stages of my life where I enjoyed just hip hop. Then I would just want to listen to rock. After a while I got into pop music. So depending on the year my #TBT varies in genres. I remember in middle school and my freshmen year I enjoyed rap. Gangstas Paradise was the hit on the radio and I would have that blasting on my Walkman (Google it). Then my softmore and JR year in high school I would drown my thoughts with Korn and Limp Bizkit (yes yes I know). Then in 2001 Dr. Dre came in with The Chronic and I was hooked. But the band that really shifted my music taste was Incubus. It’s amazing to think of the diversity in my tastes although I can’t say I’ve ever been into country music but we dont know what the future may bring, it may be my TBT in 2030.

TBT (Throwbacks)

I know it’s been a long time since my last post. I need a time away to take care of personal situations. Everywhere I turned however, a reminder of my passion was staring right back at me. Here are a couple of songs I’ve produced for a couple of artist. I’m proud not only because it is my work, but I am blessed to call them my friends… enjoy..

Music Through Time

Its amazing to hear music and hear how music has changed.  Let’s look back at some examples today starting in the 20’s….

1920s

1930s

1940s

1950s

1960s

1970s

1980s

1990s

2000-2010

and now we are here:
2011

In no way am I agreeing with top music or the top 20 or anything like that. I was just trying to show how music changes through time. I know that you can brake this down from genres to male or females etc. But the purpose of this is to see how far music has come… and you decide..are we getting better music now, or worse?

Production: What is Compression?

Compression is probably the most used tool in the production environment, but the least understood.   Although it can help, it can remove the punch from your track.  To use compression correctly we first have to understand how it works.   In it’s most simple explanation, compression is an automatic volume control.  It can reduce the difference the difference between the loudest and softest audio signal.  You can use it to tighten a bass track.  Make a drum track more punchy.  you can also use the popular side-chain gate effect.  Rather than just talk about this,   I found a great video that talks about a compressor..
